Representation Matters

As Mrs. USA, Dr. Edwards is dedicated to serving as an ambassador for women and youth in her state and across the nation. Dr. Edwards holds three degrees including a Doctorate in Medical Science with an executive leadership focus from A.T. Still University, a Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from Marquette University, and a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing from Cardinal Stritch University. She currently works as a physician assistant in occupational medicine and plans to expand her career as a health policy correspondent.

Through Dr. Edwards exceptional career and title as Mrs. USA, she works to advocate for representation for underrepresented groups. She uses her platform to highlight the importance of representation and diversity especially in the healthcare sector and emphasizes that a lack of representation directly contributes to worsening health outcomes among minorities. Dr. Edwards also created her own program to help aspiring physician assistants of color and non-traditional backgrounds and has awarded multiple scholarships through her program.

Outside of advocating for representation in the healthcare industry, Dr. Edwards also aims to aid young women of color in reaching their goals. Dr. Edwards, who was a single teen mom and first-generation college graduate, shows young women and girls that it is possible to reach success despite adversaries they may face. Only 40% of teen moms graduate from high school and less than 2% earn a college degree before the age of 30. Dr. Edwards beat the odds, serving as her high school's valedictorian and graduating Magna Cum Laude from Marquette University while performing her duties as a mom of four. She has used her title as Ms. Wisconsin to make a difference in the lives of young women while guiding them in their own educational journeys. She is also very active in her community, serving as a member of Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. and working with multiple organizations including: the Milwaukee Urban League of Young Professionals, The Global Women’s Alliance for Leadership and Empowerment, the Wisconsin Association of Physician Assistants and many more.
